I absolutely LOVE painting architectural designs and details, which seem to be found everywhere if you just look for them. Coming from Europe where architectural peculiarities are everywhere, I always had fun finding them. So when I said to my American friends that I wanted to do a series on architectural elements in Shrewsbury, MA, their reaction was an immediate “There is no architecture in Shrewsbury. You won’t find anything, it isn’t Europe!” I was pretty sad to hear that, but still thought there was no way I couldn’t find something interesting.

Shrewsbury has houses and churches and schools just like in Europe, after all! So I went on a hunt, and passed a small turret I had noticed above the Artemis Ward house a while back. See Shrewsbury-ians!?! The secret is to look up! Anyways, I took some pictures and had a great time creating this painting - especially with the slate roof, clapboard siding, and beautiful weather vane. I hope you’ve noticed some small, interesting architectural points around your town!
